Das Musika!
Download and listen using any MP3 or RealAudio(tm) player.
Almost all of the works on this page are constructed from a mix of live and
"sampled" sounds. The computer is
the instrument. The music is first scored using various music notation programs
and then instrumented using multiple, vintage sound cards; each with their own unique
sound samples. Each card and chipset is like a unique instrument and even though the
music is digital in nature, it will sound very different on each. For this reason,
I've elected to rerecord each performance to disk and convert to an MP3 file. Using
this technique, both the original sound samples and articulations are preserved at the
time of composition and recording. If all of this sounds too complicated don't
worry, it still sounds pretty good for computer generated music. Fully annotated
sheet music is available upon request for selected works.
Tierra De La Fantasia (Dream World) - This work was conceived as soma
(body) music. A pensive melody dances upon a shifting orchestral tapestry. Due
to the extreme dynamic range of this work a sub-woofer or headphones are
required for faithful reproduction.
Music In A Box - This is one of the few pieces of non-synthetic music in
the collection, it began it's existence as a Mel Bay guitar exercise and now lives in my
fingers as a link to distant memories.
RocketNo1 - RocketNo1 blasts off with some tricky guitar work by
Bend Wilkens. Lou
Chilten's soprano sax work is tastefully rude and the horn section sounds like an over-wound clock spring! (Ok, I made all that stuff and
it does
sound like the sound track to a cartoon but I like it.)
Highland Fantasy - Suggestive of Ireland or the Scottish Highlands
this fanciful work continues the groundbreaking psycho-acoustic experience of Tierra De La
Fantasia. Digitally mastered in the subterranean vaults of a reputed highland ruin (just
kidding). A panoramic montage that is soothing in it's subtle
complexities. It is a captivating
get-away designed to release stress and tension as well as stimulate the imagination.
(Dragons) In Green By Water Flowing - Draw power from the stones or
store it up for leaner times. Journey though verdant forests to the halls of Wormly
Manor. Your pleasure awaits within.
Serenade
Of The Seven Stars
Serenade Of The Seven Stars - Caravans of percussion meander across
the sometimes-perfect Alto Pacifica guided only by the virtues of the Seven Sisters. Voca
Metro, enchanted by the beauty, strength, and wisdom of her guides, is inspired and offers
a serenade in thanks.
A Variation On
Monaghan's Jig
Monaghan's Jig - A traditional dance piece, with flute, tin whistle,
tambour, box fiddle and hound's horn. Fire ale and bright water light the night.
Couples circle the bon, sparks shooting up into a black velvet sky
sprinkled with stars.
Wee Dance
Wee Dance - In dulcimer caves, by the ocean, bands of gypsies once gathered to take a wee
drink, talk, laugh, smile, make music and move about in a wee dance.
Mountain Moon
Mountain Moon - Beneath the mountain moon, the water and the rock moved together, each at their own
pace, on a long journey. They enjoyed each other's company so much that they
decided to make a home together. Water, encouraged by a dream, searched and searched
for a place to call home and one day it found just the right place; a lovely spot at the
bottom of a great fall surrounded by tall, friendly trees and their many friends.
Water blessed the earth on which the trees stood and in return it moved aside making a
place for the rock to be. The rock, surrounded by the water, was content.
Siegeis a provocative piece done as a short movement in
the classical style. It's haunting oboe work is ranked highly in the tubes.
Summer Symphony was written as a tribute to the courage and spirit of a friend fighting her way through chemo-therapy. She spent only one brief afternoon with our family. We too her children to Capitola Beach, near Santa Cruz, CA, while she and my wife stayed at our that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. They played a favorite card game of hers for many, many hands. When her family moved to the east, to be with her extended family, she asked if we wanted to purchase her husbands new truck for $100; just so they wouldn't have to tow it. We said, "Sure!" It's still sits in the driveway and is now some twenty years old and long past its prime. I keep it anyway. Perhaps someday I'll find a good home for it but for now it seems to be content where it is.
The begining of a work that may never be finished in my lifetime, although, there is always hope.
Highland Green
Highland Green is a very short piece that parades about the loc once
and then looks for the stout at the local pub.
Palm Tree
Polka
Ok, the other stuff didn't do it for you. Perhaps you need something a little
more rowdy? Here' just the thing! Grab some co-workers, turn up the volume and
dance round the water cooler to the strains of the tuba, concertina, clarinet,
trumpet and drum in the Palm Tree Polka!
Can't
Take My Mind Off Of You
It's raining cats and dogs outside and all you can think about is her/him. The
spaghetti dinner flopped but you still have hope that there something in the relationship.
The problem is that you just have a little trouble getting the message across.
Perhaps this will help. (Ok, this is really terrible but they say laughter brings
people closer together, right?)
