The physical eye conjoins the mental eye in an attempt to reconcile abrupt changes in perceived reality.  It may seem strange to say that we hear with our eyes or see with our ears and yet we give little thought to the converse.  Consider though, having only the sense of touch, smell, and taste with which to interpret your surroundings.  Try it some day.  Seal your eyes and ears shut and have a friend escort you though your daily routine.  How much of what you do every day would still be meaningful?  What was important to you when you could not see or hear?  How did your priorities shift?  Consider how you might exist if the situation were permanent.  Consider how your life would be, at the age you are now, if it was the only existence you had ever known.
