Dude! That’s what the ten-foot pole is for! I mean, yeah, you can also use it to carefully press on each flagstone of the corridor to check for traps. But I mostly use it to root through piles of filth without exposing myself to rot grubs. Because he’s right; that’s where all the best treasure is.

Maybe the Cleric of Pelor (presumably that’s what the sunbursts on his armor are supposed to indicate) should do his goddamn job and drop a heal on his buddy.
Sure, the cleric could waste a spell curing his ally. Or he could wait until the idiot dies then search the corpse for treasure: THAT’S where the best treasure really is.
And that’s how we did things back in the second edition.
That cleric had better stop bitching and start applying the fire. Rot grubs in your arm means you have only minutes to live, and he’s wasting valuable time with his ‘tude.

I do hope to do more of these. I’ve got a copy of the 1977 Monster Manual on my desk, ready to inspire. It says “OVER 350 MONSTERS,” so that should provide material for a while.
I was thinking of doing these in a quick and/or dirty sketchy style, but I realized that with my deadlines, being able to take my time on something is a real luxury. So they’ll come out, you know, whenever.

Your D&D humour is the best! I still get a laugh from the Book of Ratings on D&D monsters. I’m so glad you’re gonna do more of these, even if it’s only every so often.
Oh, this is just awesome. I am very much looking forward to your Beholder comic.

I don’t suppose it’d be possible to post the original artwork with these, would it?

There’s a level to this that only hard-core rolegamers can appreciate, I think. It’s this whole thing with talking casually about awful things happening to your character.
“You burst into flames!”
“Well, this is rather unpleasant.”
“Uh, you are on fire. Pain! Hurt! You should scream!”
“Yeah, whatever, my character gives a little girly scream. How much damage do I take?”
It’s all about staying in character. You know, for atmosphere’s sake and all that.
>I for one would like to see the question of Otyugh vs Neo-Otyugh finally put to rest.
In the other life, you’re Thomas A. Otyugh, omnivorous scavenger and productive member of the dungeon ecosystem. You have an inexplicable hoard of gold pieces, you’re worth a respectable number of experience points, and you… help your landlady by eating all of her garbage. One of these lives has a future….and one of them does not.
So you have to get through over 349 Monster Manual Comix before you can start in on Fiend Folio Comix?
Which book are mind flayers in?

Mind Flayers are in the Monster Manual. I’m not sure what I’m missing out on. Githyanki, sure. Kuo-Toa? And Drow don’t get more than a mention.
I’m also not sure I want to do separate comics for all 28 dinosaurs in the Monster Manual, most of which don’t even get a drawing.

There are all kinds of wacky critters in the Monster Manual just begging for a strip: the beholder; the roper; the rust monster; the gelatinous cube; the bulette; the umber hulk.
But drow and githyanki are Fiend Folio monsters! Um, or at least they were in first edition … but surely that’s what counts!

No! Unless you’re playing from the notebooks Gygax and Arneson personally used to write the original rules, you’re not really playing D&D. The One True Edition had no Box! Just to be clear:

sorry about that. Just to be clear [/sarcasm] (blast actually being able to use html coding in these responses! Now its not even funny anymore.)
You know, I saw this on Bad Gods and I had to come back and say: I think the place for these is definitely Bad Gods, but the layout should be like this here. It just works much better vertical than 2×2 grid. I think because the tiles are so wide. They don’t call them tiles, though. Panels! Anyway, with the panels reading straight top-to-bottom, the flow of the sequentiality is greatly imrpvoed.
Whoa. I should fix that typo, but as I look at it I’m thinking that it could be an imrpvoement.
Whoa – and another thing! Very deft rendition of the wigglyness of those little dudes, while eschewing cliched motion lines. The flesh pucker does double duty!
I can’t keep returning to these things, finding new touches to appreciate. People will talk.

My policy with all treasures in a pile of filth is that if it is worth having, it is fireproof. Fire: Nature’s Hand Sanitizer.
Do a half Ilithid Luchador!!
One successful grapple check AND YOU DIE!!
Nice toon Lore.
