The more things change, the less they stay the same. I must like Final Fantasy XIII pretty okay, because I’m still playing it even though I bought it and played it specifically to get an article out of it. I’m pretty satisfied with the level of strategic thinking required to win battles quickly. Making each battle into sort of a star-earning minigame is clever, it adds some interest to what would be, in most cases, a foregone conclusion.
I’m also planning on playing more of the original Final Fantasy, but I can’t decide whether to go forward on the Wii Virtual Console or the iPhone. The iPhone is prettier, easier to use, and the story makes two or three licks more sense, but Virtual Console is the more authentic experience, you know?

I get very tired of the amnesiac quality to Final Fantasy reviews – people seem to imprint on one version of the game, forget all its flaws, and decide that it was perfect and everything else is crap. Your column was super refreshing.
If the Virtual Console version is truly authentic, do yourself a favor and play the iPhone version. Unless you really think you’re up for the powerleveling required for the Marsh Cave and, later on, the Earth Cave.
No power-leveling required! Just use Brickroad’s approach to minimize grinding and finish the game with your levels in the low 20’s. You’ll want to go here to see the screen captures, but I’d recommend the message board version for the full context. (The impromptu renaming of the SORCERER alone is worth it.)
Argh. Make that WIZARD, not SORCERER.
If you still have a GBA/DS Lite you should track down a copy of Final Fantasy I & II Dawn of Souls. The grinding is drastically reduced from the original and unlike the iPhone version it doesn’t look like a Korean MMO.
