So I combined that with the fact that I’ve recently spent a lot of time getting Pocket Informant on the iPhone just how I like it, and this is what emerged. I’ve gone through several cycles of liking it a lot and not liking it very much, and now it’s out there.

I am aware of the irony of writing about paying for stuff you can get for free at the same time that I have a new paid app that duplicates what you can get for free. (Although, I’ll add, with some nifty iPhone features.)

In real life, I’m bothered by not outraged by the latest purge. I’m not concerned about my ability to look a nudie pics, for the reasons I go into in the article. But Apple is making it more difficult to pretend I have a general-purpose computing device rather than What Apple Thinks I Should Have. I’m not about to toss my iPhone, but it does dampen my enthusiasm for the iPad somewhat.

I think if Google is Sauron, then Frodo symbolizes the common geek, and the One Ring is the Internet. Boromir symbolizes Apple, I guess. Gollum is probably Microsoft. And Aragon is, I dunno, probably Linux or something. Legolas and Gimli are Metafilter and Boing Boing, not necessarily in that order. Merry and Pippin are Digg and Reddit. Maybe? Anyhow, I’m not really able to work out the details but I kind of hope Jonathan Coulton ends up being Tom Bombadil.

For the purposes of the poll, by “handheld devices” I mean iPhone, Android, that sort of thing. Kindle and other e-book readers are handheld devices, too, I guess. And by “dedicated apps” I mean either a program dedicated to a specific comic, or dedicated to reading comics in general.

Not much to say about this one, except that the best joke is probably in the cartoon at the top.

How have I been? Well, most of my creative energy has been going into making an iPhone App, the delivery of which is currently up to the Powers That Bureauc. So I think I’m going to start a second app while I wait. I have quite a few ideas, but I’m starting with some of the simpler ones while I get this thing called Objective-C worked out.

Also, I got one of those little convection-microwave-grill ovens. So far it’s mostly a microwave that also makes great bacon.

I really am looking forward to getting an iPad, although my plans for purchasing technology gang aft agley. I can completely see why people wouldn’t be enthused by it. Someone at Metafilter said it occupies “the uncanney valley of gadgetry,” which is fair enough. I just happen to have a timeshare in that valley.

I also might be influenced by the fact that I’m currently working on an app for the iPhone, so anything else that can run it is fine by me.

Anyhow! I liked my drawing of a cat, so here’s a desktop wallpaper of that same art. Might look good on an iPad, guess I’ll find out.
