Official Bad Gods Comment Thread

Well, this marks the end of the first Sean and Wormwood arc over at Bad Gods. You've seen a pretty decent range of material at this point, so I'd like to invite your feedback. What do you like? What don't you like maybe so much? Do you have any suggestions on site navigation or features? If you have questions about Bad Gods you'd like answered, this thread would also be a good place to ask them.

I'm really liking the series, and was glad you're continuing, and todays punchline was all worth it.
I didn't like the randomness of road ends, but the baby carrots was nice, not sure why though.
Why is the archive in reverse? makes things kinda confuzzling.
Do you have any plans for more interactive ones? bullet time was one of the most amusing.

Sinister, black and hilarious. I loved it. There's just not enough satanist humor out there. Maybe "Life Inside a Meth Lab" is next? Dangerous, yes, but hilarious potential. The "no teeth" jokes alone could keep it going for a week.

I did have a bit of trouble hearing Sean when he spoke. On the one hand it really made me listen and it was really worth it. But it sometimes made me run it twice. I guess I'm getting old.

Very Fun Site, I Liked All Of Them, And I Really Liked The Sean And Wormwood Series. I Sent It to My Friends Around The Office.

I liked it, but this seems like as good of a place as any to ask whether anyone else was unable to view episode 7 using the Linux flash plugin. I know that said plugin is getting on in years, but it hangs every time I load that episode, while the other episodes play just fine. Maybe it has something to do with those previously-mentioned annotations?

I am especially fond of Sean. He's mostly good for giving punchlines, but you might work him in more. He also had the best line of the series so far: "Settlers of Catan."

They've been fun so far. My major nit is that the only way to see the titles is through the archive view. If I point someone directly to the (episode?) they never see the title.

I loved that it was done with a story arc, and that the individual parts of the story worked as standalone gags. As far as Sean and Wormwood, my only suggestion is that I'd like to see more.

Bad Gods as a whole, the ones that grabbed me were the ones with characters engaging in dialogue of some kind. A lot of the weird, "here's a thing" gags were funny too, but they're the kind of thing that I'd almost rather catch in the background of some story. I guess that does against what you're trying to do with bad gods, though.

To summarize, Bad Gods is something I will continue to look at and enjoy once every week or so, unless there is a continuing storyline, in which case I will watch my RSS feed with slavering anticipation.

I enjoyed the whole Sean and Wormwood cycle most of all the Bad Gods offerings (although on an individual basis, I think "Spare a Quarter" was the funniest). The ongoing storyline made it more engaging than the quick sight gags. I'm still very intrigued by your proposal for the Bad Gods series with actual bad gods.

In general, I liked the ones with actual animation and dialogue the best, because they have more replay value. After all, the value of Internet entertainment is set by its capacity for being watched over and over and over again. Or maybe that's just me.

This didn't seem important enough to mention, but since you're asking: the clipping in the door opening and closing sounds bothers me. They're a little loud, too. Aside from that, it's all good.

It's neat. While I enjoyed the episodic Sean and Wormwood stuff, I think that kind of stuff tends to be better when interspersed with other shorts, apart from when they immediately follow on... But that could just be me.

Another thing, the "Source" and "Embed" links don't work. And there's no explaination that they're coming soon, or that you decided not to do them after all.

The Embed link just spits out <div id="flashcontent">, for me. looking at the page source it looks like it should be working. Maybe your text box is just too small? I'm viewing this in Firefox (on both Mac OSX and WinXP)

I enjoyed the series so far. Storylines are fun, but even without, I've enjoyed it.

I had trouble understanding the female dialog in the first installment of the Sean and Wormword arc.

The dialog is a little quiet when compared to the door sounds.

The format is fun. I don't think I've followed anything else flash-based on the net, save Homestarrunner.com and Illwillpress.com. The format here is much more informal. It's a quick chuckle. Kind of like playing Warioware, except without making me curse and throw things.

Also, kudos for Sean being who Sean is. I just find it amusing that the big, blue spooky guy has a name like Sean.

Keyboard Chronicles has the potential to be regularly cited in messageboard conversations.

Anyhow, keep up the good work, I'm enjoying it.

I liked it quite a bit! The only thing I'd add is a permanent link to the latest one, so you can send said link to one's friends.

I liked very much. Though as mentioned by foo, I did have problems hearing the tall guy . . . Sean, that's it! Mabey it's becaues I am loosing my hearing . . . or because my speakers on my computer are prolly relics of the early 90's . . . either way, Sean was hard to hear . . . but still IT FREAKING ROCKED MY SOCKS!
For some reason I keep thinkig them haveing something to do with something really girly, like the balett, modles (oh the fun you could have there! just think about it!), Emo kids (bah them!), or something completly random like dolphins and sea monkies.
You are doing a bang up job with everyhting! More interactive stuff would be ever so lovely, but as I am sure, we all understand that you are a busy man, so mabey one a month or there abouts?
Oh and have you ever considered creating your owne religion . . . I'd join for lack of anything better to do other than throw rocks at stuff. Seriously though, that woudl totally rock!

I didn't have any problems with the dialogue, and I'm using a laptop so the speakers might not be as high quality as those with a full setup.
As far as content, I think you're doing a wonderful job. I've always like your voice acting work (even from the earliest days of Bandwidth Theater), and the humor style is similarly unique.
I think it's particularly unique the way you're able to work with somewhat of a running storyline (not only Sean and Wormwood but also the mayo/baby carrots man), while still utilising the ability to focus on a joke because of the brevity of the animation.

In all, I'd say it's the latest in a long line of your successes and I'd love to see more.

Thanks for the feedback, folks.

Those of you who are having problems understanding Sean: does that also apply to the latest animation, episode eight? The first couple have much worse balance than the last one, and I'm interested to hear if I need to tweak it still more.

I think they're great characters, and I love the darkening background for Sean's dialog.

I'm a little confused by the... um, antitheology? They kill a guy who's evil, so, they're good? Only they're going to make him their intern, so in fact they're evil. Except Wormwood seemed to think the guy deserved getting killed, so maybe they're good?

I know I could just sit back and enjoy the jokes. But humorous stories (as opposed to one-off jokes) often work best if the underlying story could just as well be told straight, without the jokes. (It's one reason "Airplane!" works so well-- the structure and story are actually quite solid.)

Interesting point, Zompist. For now I'm just going to say that the ambiguity is not entirely unintentional, and that the subject is up for debate.

Well, everyone's pretty much already said my piece for me, but I'll reiterate:

The door slamming sound is a bit jarring.

I like the story arcs, but they seem more Bandwidth Theater than Bad Gods. My understanding is that Bad Gods is meant to be a semi-random series of funnythings. Mayhaps "story" episodes should be interspersed with "one-shot" episodes to preserve the flavor.

"Spare a Quarter," "The Battle for the Feminist Bookstore," the "Song Titles" series, and the Sean and Wormwood saga are my personal favorites. "End of the Road," "Nintendogs Homecoming," and the "baby carrots" guy, not so much. "End of the Road" seems incomplete. I can see where "Nintendogs Homecoming" was going, but it's not really strong enough to stand on its own. And the "baby carrots" guy is just kind of annoying.

It's hard to say why the good ones are good, which doesn't make things any easier, I'm sure. All I can say is that "Spare a Quarter" and "Feminist Bookstore" actually feel like jokes, while those others I mentioned just sort of sit there being silly.

And Sean and Wormwood are just a great comedy duo, They're like Abbot and Costello from an alternate universe, and Sean is a really interesting and funny take on the "straight man."

Zompist, is killing an (medium) evil person and act of good? I mean, apart from in the D&D universe. Perhaps the evil of the Satanist organization is the belief that two wrongs make a right. (Or the acknowledgement that two wrongs don't make a right, but doing it anyway)

I really enjoyed these. Usually I visit Bad Gods randomly when I'm thinking of it (a habit picked up from the erratic days of brunching) but the arc had me checking regularly. Since you've asked, I found the timing between episodes a little off. Sometimes a large gap of time had passed (skipping the orgy, you tease!) and other times it seemed to pick up almost immediately (chatting up Debbie). Not really a huge deal, just noticed.

I'm loving it so far.

I think it would be nice to have the titles beforehand though, if only because then I could send Sean and wormwood to people and have them get individual episodes without having to start at the beginning. The thing I'm liking most about Bad Gods is that it's bitesized. I can send it to someone, and they don't have to know the full on history of each character to really get it. And I think i'd prefer character so show up more randomly than in complete storylines.

Oh, and I miss Eisely.

I thought they were great. I was pleased most to see that you spelled Sean in the traditional way...none of that Shawn or Shaun crap.

I would, however, like to see more Beholder gags.

You've made 2 false assumptions (in my case, at least):
1) That I would deign to criticize (positively or negatively) your works.

2) That I've actually been able to see any of the Bad Gods features.

Hmmph. Sucks for me that I'm using Mozilla with Howard Hughes-level security settings. Worse yet, I'm one of the Great Unwashed without iTunes or a Mac.

...but since you asked, I'll wager that they're all clever, insightful, and entertaining.

Lore, the newest one has better sound for the tall guy, but I still find myself straining quite a bit to make out his words. It's distracting to have to focus that hard, which can ruin the jokes for me, so I'd say that's the #1 issue with the site. A related problem (as mentioned earlier) is the door-open sound -- it's so loud that I instinctively reduce the volume a bit, which makes the voice work all the less intelligible.

I have to say I enjoyed the one-off jokes more than the story arc, but I suspect the voice issues may have been the cause of that; it's hard to say.

I liked the parts with the funny funny laughtime haha bits.

I enjoyed the Sean and Wormwood arc, but there are bits of Sean's dialogue that I can't understand no matter how many times I play them - moreso in the earlier half. Actually, I had the same problem with the old dude in the mayonaise clip. Otherwise, quite happy.

No one has mentioned it, so let me offer props for the shout out to C.S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters (which had an apprentice devil character named Wormwood).

I haven't been having any trouble understanding Sean in any of the episodes, though it might be since I listen to everything through headphones. When going back to compare the voice over the episodes, though, I did notice that he had a little more echo in some episodes than others... it's particularly noticeable in 'clam dip', and I have to say I really like the effect. Much spookier.

Sean and Wormwood were big big fun, but I did find myself wishing for a little variation inbetween. It was like reading the Far Side and then suddenly it starts having a regular cast of characters. It's still funny, but feels a little bit thematically constricted.

Though, hmm, on second thought that's probably just a matter of what I'd gotten used to. After all, nobody ever complained about Calvin & Hobbes for not being a single-panel comic with cows. But my point is, I liked clicking open the little door without having any idea what I was going to get, better than clicking open the door thinking "I wonder what those scamps Sean and Wormwood are up to today." (And I disagree with people who are asking for up-front titles for the same reason... though it wouldn't hurt to put the title of the piece at the end with the credits.)

BTW, my four-year-old son loves Bad Gods and plays "Winetasting" several times a day. I'm not sure what this means.

The "get a life" Bad Gods is very similar to the Doonesbury strip for December 3, 1993.

Huh! I don't think I ever saw that. Whenever I find that someone has made a similar joke to one of mine, I never know whether to feel bad because it's not unique, or good because hey, I came up with a joke similar to -- and presumably as good as -- that of a well-known humorist.

Oh, man ... I may be the only one, but I miss the loud sliding door, now.

I request the inclusion of an adjustable sliding volume control so that each viewer can choose their own optimal door loudness.

Okay. Not really. I'll just crank the volume on my PC when the door goes up.

My favourites actually are the basic image + music. Compensating is great, "Appealing To My Demographic" is absolutely awesome but it would be better to have the title on the page itself. "The Battle for the Feminist Bookstore" and "Episode 3.11" were also very good. I didn't like the satanist series that much, sorry.
