There's a great article in the New Yorker about the science and psychology of artificial sweetener. Unfortunately, it's not online, but they do have an amusing but less informative article about Tab fanatics in the media industry.

I had a friend and room-mate who drank cases of diet soda. One day I got him to try water. He realized how much better water tasted than diet soda and has been drinking water ever since.

have you tried Coke zero? It tastes better than real Coke.
No, I don't work for Coke...

Artifically sweetened soda is just a reaction to the overconsumption of what used to be considered an occassional treat.

Be glad that artificial sweetener doesn't make your insides roil like it does my woman's.

Now, if someone could only bust the Mr. Pib / Dr. Pepper Conspiracy.
Mr. Pip ≠ Dr. Pepper, so I’d wish people would stop trying to force Mr. Pip on me anytime I ask for Dr. Pepper.
One time, at a movie theater, out of habit I asked for a Dr. Pepper, but then glanced at the Fountain to see that all they had was Mr. Pip. “Oh - never mind - I’ll just have water.” The clerk was like “Oh, that not Mr. Pip, it’s really Dr. Pepper. We just haven’t changed the labels yet.”
It wasn’t Dr. Pepper.
