My husband insists that the cost of renting a car is less than the cost of wear on our own vehicles, so we always rent a car for road trippin'. After reading this I find a more likely motive...
Is there any person or algorithm out there that doesn't like "One Night in Bangkok"? In college, we listened to "Chess" constantly because it was the only thing everybody in the lab liked.
Lore - I always super enjoy your articles for Wired, but this one had me seizing with joy and hilarity. In a good way. I wasn't holding a pen. The bit about experimenting with buttons rang out clear for me. I just bought a new car, and in the process drove about half a dozen models - each with a new and different and astonishing array of buttons to explore and understand. Radio controls and cruise and power windows and rear-wiper rocker switches! There are so many exciting options in the world of console and steering wheel buttons, even of the mundane type. MI:6 must have special button-testing-resistance training.
Oh. My. God. The mention of "One Night in Bangkok" in the context of a road trip has triggered in me a wash of nostalgic longing for They Might Be Giants' "Flood," Chip Davis' "Fugue," and the entire collection of Animaniacs soundtracks. Oh, du schone Schnitzelbank!
